Yetminster: Several cows died after being hit by trains on rails

A clean-up operation is now in place after the collision

A herd of cows have died after walking on railway tracks and being hit by a train.

The cattle were hit by a Great Western Railway (GWR) service near Yetminster yesterday.

It has caused chaos for passengers in Somerset and Dorset, with all services passing between Yeovil Pen Mill and Weymouth canceled until the end of the day.

A cleanup operation is now removing the debris from the line while engineers are looking for damage.

Anyone who has already purchased tickets can use them on South Western Railway services between Weymouth and Southampton Central.

A GWR spokesman said: ‘After a train hit several cows near Yetminster yesterday, a clean-up operation is in place.

‘Until this is completed and the Great Western Railway can ensure that the line is not damaged, the trains will be changed.

‘We expect disruption to continue until the end of the day.’
