A woman in China got a procedure to straighten out some facial asymmetry… when the most awful thing happened… Seriously, this story is not for the weak-stomached!
According to a case report published in the latest issue of the medical journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, an unnamed 33-year-old Chinese woman walked into a plastic surgery clinic one day last year to repair her “facial contour asymmetry.”
After doctors at the clinic took a look at her face, they ultimately suggested she receive a fat injection in her eyelid in order to make both sides of her face more uniform with each other. All good, right? The woman thought so, and she went under sedation for the procedure.

But then, as they were performing the fat injection, doctors reported to the medical journal that they watched several contact lenses come down from the upper fornix (the space between the upper eyelid and the eyeball) and present themselves. SEVERAL?!? Yes, before doctors could even react, a total of FIVE soft contact lenses suddenly migrated down and popped right out of the woman’s eye.
WHAT?!?!
BRB, going into the bathroom to preemptively wash out our eyes while also promising ourselves to never fall asleep in our contact lenses ever, ever, EVER again! Goodness!!!
According to the medical journal, when the fat was injected into the woman’s eyelid, it “compressed” the space between the eyelid and the eyeball. In turn, that quickly forced the lenses out from where they had been hiding for YEARS. No wonder girl wasn’t symmetrical, she was full of silicone already!
After the woman woke up from sedation, doctors asked her about it, and she admitted that she’d lost left contact lenses “several” times over the years, but that was a long time ago. The journal reported:
“She recollected instances of losing her left contact lens several times many years prior. Interestingly, she had not experienced any ocular symptoms before this surgical intervention.”
Ultimately, the medical journal warned other plastic surgeons that treating patients with a similar facial contour asymmetry could lead to similarly shocking results:
“The soft and hydrophilic nature of the soft contact lenses also makes them less noticeable. … There might be an increased potential for larger hidden spaces within the upper fornix, increasing risk of dislodged contact lenses being hidden.”
Unreal…
Amazingly, this is not the first time that doctors have discovered contact lenses hiding out above someone’s eyeball. It’s not even the worst time! Back in 2022, an ophthalmologist in California went viral after sharing a video of herself removing 23 (!!!) contact lenses from underneath a patient’s eyeball.
Now, clinicians all over the world are back to warning people to NEVER FALL ASLEEP WITH THEIR CONTACT LENSES IN AT NIGHT! That may not have saved all five of the lenses this Chinese woman reported “losing,” but it’s one reliable way to help avoid the issue altogether. Per the Cleveland Clinic:
“Is sleeping with contacts safe? The short answer? No. Even if you’re just resting your eyes to take a quick nap, you should still pop out those contacts. Falling asleep for any amount of time increases your risk for irritation or infection.”
Amen to that!
Aaaaaaand we’re gonna go get our glasses prescription updated. You know, just in case.
What about U, Perezcious readers?!
