Why the supply of breast milk substitute is low and what is being done about the shortage

For several months, American parents and caregivers have been facing dwindling supplies of infant formula. But in recent weeks, the products have been particularly difficult to find, forcing some retailers to limit their purchases while the Food and Drug Administration struggles to respond to the crisis.

About 1 in 4 parents exclusively breastfeed their children before they turn 6 months old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, leaving a large majority of parents and caregivers at least partially dependent on breast milk substitutes.
