While Londoners would be lucky to have a bonsai tree as a green space in their first home, This Mornings garden expert and Instagram influencer Daisy Payne, 25, looked to the Cotswolds to get up the property ladder and a garden to start.

Daisy is also a brand ambassador for garden center specialists Dobbies.

When and where did you buy your first home?

In the Cotswolds five years ago with Help To Buy. The house is a 3-bedroom townhouse, with a small rectangular garden and a shed; a nice starter home. It was a new construction, and when I moved into the garden, it was just a mud stain.

I had never had my own garden before because I had only ever lived in rented apartments. It was pretty overwhelming to get started.

What made you get on the real estate ladder?

I would not have been able to get up the housing ladder if it were not for Help to buy, and I was encouraged by a friend who had bought her first home this way.

What did you fall in love with?

The best thing about the house is how ingeniously the space is maximized. You really get that with new construction, which is great.

To me, the garden is such a lovely extension of the house and it is my favorite bit. It gives me so much space, and not just physical space, but headspace.

I had never had it before and I feel this is the real benefit of owning your own home.

A sense of security and reassurance that this is yours and you can truly begin to nurture and nurture your space, whether it is inside or out. Maybe a little more outside of me.

Did you also get to work with the interior?

It took me a while to get a feel for the new house, so I took my time when it came to interiors and decor.

For me, it felt important to keep the interior really fresh, but also to live in the Cotswolds, I would like to have a slightly rural vibe in the house. The kitchen has a real country look.

The lounge is a beautiful but quite warm shade of dark blue, with cream furniture. In a way, it’s pretty coastal, but most importantly, it’s really fresh.

Best memory so far?

My favorite is when I got my little dog, Ernie. Sharing a home with my beautiful little cocker spaniel really brings the feeling of a home to life.

He loves the house, he loves the garden even more, and bringing him home when he was a puppy was truly magical.

How important are plants?

They are so important to me. I love surrounding myself with houseplants as they have been shown to improve your mood and reduce stress. I also love growing my own. It gives me a real sense of accomplishment.

Growing your own vegetables and salad at home, either in a window sill, in a window box or in pots if you have a little bit of patio space, is also so healthy and rewarding. You can recycle plastic from your grocery store.

The containers with sponges are ideal for seed sowing, or you can try cutting the bottom out of a plastic bottle and using it as a small pot.

A packet of seeds will cost you less than £ 1, so you just need some peat-free compost, water, sunshine and a little bit of patience.

Any tips on creating a perfect garden?

Look on Pinterest, look in magazines, Instagram and get inspiration from your local garden center. I spend a lot of time at my local Dobbies to get inspiration, ask questions to the experts and try new things.

Did it change your life?

Buying a home made me want to thrive in other aspects of my life. Having your own home allows you to really move on, grow and in real terms.

I spent a lot of my income on rent, so it was a win-win for me. I just feel very lucky that I was able to buy as so many people are struggling to save to make it a reality and the current cost of living crisis is making it even harder.
