A boy from Connecticut who was hospitalized with serious burns after he was allegedly attacked by a bully was honored with a parade Thursday in which police officers and even the mayor attended to help lift his spirits.

Family members and friends gathered outside the window at Bridgeport Hospital for Dominick Krankall, 6, to the parade as he watched from the window, Fox 5 reported in New York.

Dominick is recovering in hospital after he was found by police with severe burns to his face, which stemmed from an incident in which an 8-year-old neighbor allegedly threw a petrol-filled tennis ball – which was set on fire – at the boy. Fox 5 reported.

“Within seconds later, he came back around the corner on fire and shouted, ‘Mom, they lit fire in me, they lit fire in me,'” Dominic’s sister, Kayla Deegan, said according to the report. “It’s happened several times with this kid bullying my little brother.”

Deegan said the attack left her younger brother with serious injuries and drastically changed his quality of life.

“It resulted in this: My little brother was lying in the hospital bed, which could have burned to death,” she said, according to the report. “He can hardly sleep, he can hardly eat, he can hardly speak. It’s just not fair, just to see him like that makes me collapse.”

An online fundraiser for the boy, hoping to raise $ 50,000 for medical bills, has exceeded $ 500,000.

However, the mother of the older boy denied that her son attacked Dominick and urged others to wait for the results of the law enforcement investigation.

“We had a terrible tragedy recently and our thoughts and prayers are with the injured boy. We are working with the authorities to establish what happened and we fully support their investigation,” Laura Giacobbe said in a statement to Fox “We hope concerned. People will wait before drawing conclusions or making assumptions about what happened until the officials have made their decisions. Join our prayers and wish the wounded boy a full and speedy recovery.”

Dominick Krankall, 6, has a swollen face and has a long recovery, but may eventually get minimal scarring as a result of the incident.
