The Colorado car dealership group opens EV, hybrid sale and sees increased sales

Phil Long EV Outlet sold 117 electric and hybrid cars from May 2021 to the end of the year and 56 such vehicles during the first three months of 2022. That is only a small fraction of the company’s total sales. Phil Long dealers of Colorado Springs rank No. 95 on Car news‘list of the 150 best dealer groups based in the United States, with retail sales of 10,801 new vehicles in 2021. The group sold 12,070 used vehicles last year.

Buckles said the Phil Long EV Outlet is not just a one-stop-shop for customers looking for electric cars; it has also become a place where electric drivers can recharge their vehicles for 20 cents per kilowatt hour. The lot has 10 EV chargers, including four quick chargers.

Inside the store, these customers – some who find the chargers via navigation systems and jump off nearby I-25 – can have a drink and relax, Buckles and Shaughnessy said.

“We built it differently than a traditional used car dealership,” Shaughnessy said. “It’s built more like a communal lounge. It’s meant to be a place where customers can park their cars, charge them up. [and] hang out.”

The store held an Earth Day-focused event last month where Phil Long executives planned to give community members test drives in electric cars and more information on charging. The goal was that more information and exposure to electric cars could eventually drive shopper traffic to the store.

Buckles, who also oversees a nearby Kia dealer for the group, said the Phil Long EV Outlet has three sales specialists and a sales manager. Service is available from your Kia dealer, he said.

Shaughnessy said he thinks the electric car is rare. “We may be the top of this,” he said.
