Shirley Ballas has revealed she was ‘absolutely gutted’ that her fellow Strictly Come Dancing judges voted to send Kaye Adams home first.

The Loose Women panelist was paired with professional dancer Kai Widdrington in the BBC juggernaut show, competing against other stars such as Helen Skelton and Ellie Taylor.

For the first live show, the 59-year-old and Kai performed Tango to Voulez-Vous by Abba and followed up with Charleston to Music! Music! Music!.

However, after scoring 43 points out of a possible eight in both weeks, Kai and Kaye found themselves in the dreaded dance-off with Matt Goss and Nadiya Bychkova.

After dancing the Samba to Night Fever by the Bee Gee, the Bros star was saved by judges Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Craig Revel Horwood.

But on the night, Shirley revealed she would have chosen Kaye and Kai because of the ‘slightly better quality’ of the performance.

Reflecting on the first elimination on Wednesday’s The One Show, Shirley shared her regret that the pair had been kicked off the dance competition series.

Shirley explained: ‘I just felt on the night that both couples made mistakes but the quality of Kaye was far superior that night and I was absolutely gutted that she went to be honest.

‘I love my fellow referees and we’re all there to do a job, but this was one they didn’t quite get.’

When asked if she and other judges run into disagreements on the panel, Shirley replied: ‘No, not at all.

‘You know sometimes I’m just happy when they can agree and it’s not my job to send anyone home.

‘But [Kaye] was and had the most beautiful movement. She was fluid and I like fluid. So there you go.’

Since leaving the show, Kaye has shared a hilarious encounter with a waitress on Twitter.

Hours after the results were broadcast, the ITV presenter wrote: ‘Just ordered room service at my hotel. ‘The lovely lady who brought it asked me ‘any idea who walked out of @bbcstrictly tonight.?’ I said ‘me’. awkward silence.’

The One Show continues tomorrow at 7pm on BBC One.
