Today we learn that Shazam! Fury of the Gods gets a new release date. The good news is that the new date is still in the year 2022, so it will not be like The Flash. In addition, we learn that the reason the movie gets a new date is to avoid Avatar 2. Comicbook.com shares the news as follows:
The trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water has not even been released publicly, only shown on CinemaCon, and Warner Bros. Pictures has chosen to postpone the upcoming Shazam! Fury of the Gods from the same release date. Originally scheduled to arrive on December 16 with the James Cameron sequel, the DC Comics sequel will now be released on December 21 instead.
This move seems small, but it is clear that the studios understand the scope of Avatar 2. James Cameron does not often publish films, but when he does, they are almost always recognized as some of the greatest achievements in film. Avatar is the highest grossing film ever. The film briefly lost the title to Avengers: Endgame, but regained the throne after a limited re-release in 2020. It is very impressive for a film to earn millions in cinemas 11 years after its first release. We expect Avatar 2 to generate similar levels of success and fan enthusiasm throughout the Christmas holidays. I expect more movies will change their release dates when the Cinemacon trailer makes itself public.
That’s all I have for this one.
