Retro Review: SAVAGE STREETS – The Last Movie Outpost

Do you like R-rated revenge movies full of violence, boobs, full-frontal nudity, gang rape and Linnea Quigley? I certainly do. Take me on a journey into a movie with all the wonderful, magical ingredients – Savage Streets.

Savage Streets is an action-revenge film from 1984 that is pure exploitation. There is no high art to be found here. I could not even pretend to believe that the film’s creators had anything but money in mind. Hi, that’s fine with me, because it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Savage-Streets

The story follows Linda Blair as Brenda, the delicious Linnea as her deaf-mute little sister Heather and their gang of girlfriends. One night while strolling around the bad streets of LA, they encounter a typical 1980s gang of street-punk dirt. The dirty bags almost hit Linnea with their car, so in revenge the girls iron their car and throw rubbish in it.

It’s going as well as you expect. A day later, the street punks are at the girl’s high school and shake down a child who owes them money. They notice that Heather enters the gym where she is waiting for Brenda. The boys decide to take revenge for having to clear some debris out of a car by gang-raping Heather. All of this happens while Brenda is in the shower section of the gym in a fight with the jealous cheerleader. This fight scene is important because it explains why Brenda was not there for her little sister, and also because we’re going to see a hell of a lot of full-frontal nudity from the 1980s. It’s glorious.

When the guys are done with Heather, she gets kicked in the head and put in a coma, which lands her in the intensive care unit without anyone having any idea who the attackers were. A few days later, Brenda and the girls are in a club as they once again have a reunion with the gang. One of the girls is pregnant and is due to get married in a few days. As she is on her way back from the toilet, she is assaulted by the gang and she chops the leader’s face to get away.

A day or two later, they chase her down and throw her and her new wedding dress out of a bridge until her death. One of the gang members has had enough at this point. He runs to the intensive care unit, where Heather is taken care of, and tries to apologize to her while she remains in a coma. Brenda overhears and she tracks him down to his house, forcing him to give her the details.

The scene is set for a vengeance. Brenda gathers a crossbow and some bear traps and we’ll get to it! A crossbow arrow for the neck here, a bear trap for the head there. Arrows in the legs, knives in the entrails, set on fire to burn until the police arrive. They go in different ways.

This is a funny movie. Linda Blair made a number of B-movies in the 80s, and this is probably the best, and one of the few that was not a horror movie. Although she was the biggest name in the movie, she does the worst acting in it. Even Linnea, who plays a deaf-mute, manages to outact her. The supporting cast is mostly non-existent, but again, they all do better acting than Blair. Maybe Linda only behaves well when demon-possessed?

We get to see Linda naked, and of course we get to see Linnea naked. God, I love Linnea. There is a lot of nudity. The revenge killings are strangely more toned down than the rape scenes. We know where the director’s head was.

Savage Streets is absurd exploitation waste fun. A simple dingy 80s revenge story. You check it out if you’re a fan of genreflicks.
