(Reuters) – A leaked preliminary draft majority statement suggests the U.S. Supreme Court is ready to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide, Politico reported Monday.

The unprecedented leak stunned Washington. It holds the potential to reshape the political landscape ahead of the US midterm elections in November.

Here are some reactions to the report:

US INDEPENDENT SENATOR BERNIE SANDERS:

“Congress must pass legislation codifying Roe v. Wade as the law of the land in this country NOW. And if there are not 60 votes in the Senate to do so, and there are not, we must end the filibuster to pass it by 50 votes. “

FORMER US Secretary of State HILLARY CLINTON:

“This decision is a direct attack on women’s dignity, rights and lives, not to mention decades of solid law. It will kill and subjugate women, even as a large majority of Americans believe abortion should be legal. What a complete disgrace. “DEMOCRATIC SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN:

“An extremist Supreme Court is ready to overthrow #RoeVWade and impose on the whole country its right – wing extremist, unpopular views. It’s time for the millions who support the Constitution and abortion rights to stand up and make their voices heard. We are not going back – never ever.”

REPUBLICAN TEXAS ATTORNEY KEN PAXTON:

“I hope SCOTUS returns the issue of abortion where it belongs: the states. That’s why I led a 24-state coalition in support of MS law banning them after 15 weeks. I will continue to ensure that TX protects the unborn and prays for the end of abortion throughout our nation. “

REPUBLICAN SENATOR TOM COTTON:

“The Supreme Court and the DOJ must get to the bottom of this leak right away using all the necessary investigative tools. Meanwhile, Roe made a huge mistake from the beginning, and I pray that the court follows the Constitution and allows the states again to protect unborn lives.”

REPUBLICAN SENATOR JOSH HAWLEY:

“The left continues its attack on the Supreme Court with an unprecedented breach of confidentiality that is clearly intended to intimidate. Judges must not give in to this attempt to corrupt the process. Be strong.”

“I would say that if this is the opinion of the court, it is a damn opinion. Voluminously examined, tightly argued and morally powerful.”

DEMOCRATIC SENATOR AMY KLOBUCHAR:

“If nothing can be done in Washington because of Republican obstructionism, then the American people and women will have to vote, and people who believe in elections will have to vote like they have never voted before, because it is the only way we can change this. “

DEMOCRATIC NEW YORK GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL:

“This is an absolutely shameful attack on our fundamental right to choose, and we will fight it with everything we have. Let me be clear: New York will always guarantee your right to abortion. You have our word. . “

REPUBLICAN SENATOR RICK SCOTT:

“The Supreme Court’s confidential deliberation process is sacred and protects it from political interference. This breach shows that radical Democrats are working even harder to intimidate and undermine the Court. It was always their plan. The judges cannot be influenced by this attack.”

DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE AND SENATE CANDIDATE TIM RYAN

“To overthrow Roe would be completely wrong. Not to mention disastrous for Ohio, where Republicans have introduced one extreme proposal after another to ban abortion before most women even know they are pregnant. We must fight back. Ohio’s most fundamental rights are at stake. ”

DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ:

“As we have warned, SCOTUS is not just about abortion – they are coming for the right to privacy Roe rests on, which includes gay marriage + civil rights. Manchin is blocking Congress from codifying Roe. House has apparently forgotten Clarence Thomas. These 2 points should changes.”

PRESIDENT ALEXIS MCGILL JOHNSON, PLANNED FOR PARENTAL LABOR PARTY GROUP:

“This leaked statement is horrific and unprecedented, and it confirms our worst fears … Although we have seen the writing on the wall for decades, it is no less devastating and comes just as anti-abortion rights groups unveil their ultimate plan to ban abortion nationwide … (W) e will continue to fight like hell to protect the right of access to safe, legal abortion. “

NATIONAL WOMEN’S RIGHTS CENTER:

“The language of the draft statement leaked from the Supreme Court is outrageous, irresponsible and shocking. Any judge who signs this statement feeds on the harm and violence that will happen to people who become pregnant in this country.”

AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION:

“If the Supreme Court actually issues a majority opinion similar to the leaked draft authored by Justice Alito, the shift in the tectonic plates of abortion rights will be as significant as any opinion the Court has ever issued.”
