Protesters threw tomatoes at French President Emmanuel Macron during a visit to Cergy in France on Wednesday, a few days after Macron won re-election.

Macron’s security details could be seen carrying an umbrella to divert a shower of cherry tomatoes during Wednesday’s visit. Macron secured re-election on Sunday against nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen.

Footage shows Macron and his security detail wading through a crowd in Cergy, only to have a nearby man thrown with tomatoes. Security got going and covered Macron first with their hands and arms and then with umbrellas.

Macron appeared to remain relatively calm during the incident, pointing out that his entourage should move away after several seconds of confusion.

President Biden tried to call Macron to congratulate him on his victory on Sunday night, election night. Macron, however, did not accept his call as he was “at the Eiffel Tower and feeling well,” according to Biden.

Biden and Macron spoke by telephone Monday.
