Prince Charles ridiculed a truly clueless moment during the Queen’s speech

Britain’s Prince Charles on Tuesday gave the Queen’s speech for the first time after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, began to suffer from what officials called “episodic mobility problems.”

A central moment struck a sour note in many observers.

The speech, which marks the formal opening of parliament, is written by officials. In it, Charles said the administration would work to “help ease the cost of living for families” amid economic uncertainty.

The comments struck critics as more than a little weird considering the surroundings. Charles, adorned in full royal attire, delivered the speech while sitting on a gilded throne in a jeweled setting in the House of Lords:
