Bad Bunny, the world’s most popular musician on Spotify for the past two years, is set to star in a new film for Sony’s Marvel universe.
The 28-year-old Puerto Rican vocalist, real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, will star in El Muerto, whose title character is a wrestler with a super-powerful mask.
“Bringing El Muerto to life is just incredible … so exciting,” Bad Bunny told an audience at the CinemaCon industry event. The film is scheduled to premiere in 2024.
Alongside his hugely successful music career, Bad Bunny has performed as a wrestler at major WWE events, such as WrestleMania 37 in 2021 and Royal Rumble earlier this year.
This week, he announced the title of his next album, Un Verano Sin Ti, although no release date has been set. It will follow the three full-length records he released in 2020: YHLQMDLG, Las Que No Iban a Salir and El Último Tour del Mundo, whose popularity – especially in America – made him the most streamed artist on Spotify in 2020 and 2021.
El Muerto will continue a budding acting career for Bad Bunny, who will also appear in the upcoming Japan-set thriller Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt.
El Muerto also continues to expand the Spider-Man universe of characters shepherded by Sony Pictures along with Marvel’s core stable. After two films starring Venom and the latest critically panned Morbius, there should be two more Sony-Marvel films before El Muerto: Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson.
