Amazing Spider-Man # 1 makes everyone ask “What did Spider-Man do?”, Just as teasers have asked up until the launch of the new volume. And while that question seems to have a terrible and world-shaking answer, it has not been revealed yet.
But another massive surprise awaits the last few pages of the story, and it questions almost everything readers have learned over the past few years about Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson – with potentially shocking revelations waiting.
Spoilers ahead for Amazing Spider-Man # 1
Most of the question focuses on Peter Parker as he avoids people he cares about, lies and sneaks around and has to deal with or confront the consequences of whatever his actions were.
And oh yes, after the first page, the actions spring up six months later.
Whatever happened in that scene, and whatever happened over the next six months, Peter lies to Aunt May, avoids his friends, and even avoids calls from Mary Jane – who asked Peter to stay with her at the end of The previous volume of Amazing Spider-Man (ASM), but which again seems to be separate from the old Pete (although he seems to walk a lot past her apartment,
And that’s the core of Amazing Spider-Man # 1’s great revelation. No, not that Peter Parker and Mary Jane seem to be on the road again after reviving their relationship just months ago in real time, but that Mary Jane seems to have come on and live and is in some kind of relationship with a man named Paul.
But that’s just a prologue to the big bomb – Mary Jane and Paul seem to have two children together, both of whom are old enough to go and talk, even though only six months have passed between the last volume of ASM and the current relaunch.
We say “think” (and enter italics) twice for a reason. The scene is so ambiguous that it’s hard to interpret exactly what MJ and Paul’s relationship is, and even harder to interpret her relationship with the two children. But the boy’s enthusiastic greeting “MOMMY!” and her response of “KIDDOS!” and her expression of satisfaction tells you what Marvel want to you have to think for the moment (not to mention the little girl’s red hair).
So what’s the deal? Has Mary Jane had children for years that Peter (and all of us) never knew? Became MJ very close to stepchildren, very quickly? Or could this be more manipulation of Mephisto, who has been anything but shy about tumbling around with Peter and MJ’s love life and not for nothing, their children? Or is something even bigger on the way?
Editor Nick Lowe addresses these questions in the aftermath of the issue, in which he says answers will come, and urges readers to stick to the story through the shocking changes from the former Spider-Man status quo, promising more information as Amazing Spider-Man # 900 arrives later this year with the release of the upcoming Spider-Man Free Comic Book Day one-shot.
Amazing Spider-Man # 2 goes on sale on May 25th.
Speaking of Peter, Mary Jane and children, Newsarama is running downhill the story of Spidey and MJ’s children from across the multiverse.
