Washing machines make it much easier to wash clothes, but they also need to be cleaned from time to time.
A home expert demonstrated how to clean a hidden part of your washing machine and extend its life.
Instagram user Babs, who runs the Brunch With Babs account, revealed the hidden part of your washing machine you need to clean every few months.
The home expert challenged his followers to find the filter in their washing machines.
“If you don’t know where [you washing machine filter] is, you could be in trouble because you’re supposed to clean it up to four times a year,” Babs told viewers.
She gave a demonstration on how to remove the filter and clean it thoroughly.
“Mine is in the front of my machine. I’m just going to open this little door and there’s the filter. I’ve got a towel and I’ve got a bowl,” Babs said.
When the Instagrammer removed the filter, water poured out of the machine, so be sure to place your bowl carefully underneath.
After you have rinsed your filter in hot water, check behind it for objects such as frivolous socks.
Babs sprayed some white vinegar on her cloth and used it to tackle the dirt on the machine.
She explained: “Just dry the filter compartment out. Just because it’s pretty bad. So when it’s dry, just take your filter and give it a good twist to make sure it’s tight.”
After replacing the cover, you don’t have to worry about the machine’s filter for another few months.
Babs concluded: “It took all of five minutes, but it will really extend the life of your machine and you’ll have much nicer laundry.”
Instagram users took to the comments section to share their thoughts on cleaning tips.
“So it’s not true! The dryer doesn’t eat the socks…the washing machine does!” joked one viewer.
Another follower said: “WHAT???!!! I am today years old and just learning this!!! Wow!!”
“I dread to think what’s in our washing machine as we rent until we find a house,” commented a third person.
