Paul Merson has tipped Manchester United to miss out on a place in the Premier League’s top four despite their improved form.
The Red Devils started the season in dismal fashion, losing their opening two games to Brighton and Brentford.
But Erik ten Hag’s side responded by racking up four consecutive wins in the Premier League, including victories over Liverpool and Arsenal.
However, United lost their first Europa League group stage match to Real Sociedad in midweek.
Ten Hag bolstered his squad with a number of big-money signings in the summer window, including Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.
But Merson believes United will not finish in the Champions League qualification places as they ‘have a lot of work to do’ in terms of their squad.
The Arsenal legend has instead backed Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal to make up the top four, in no particular order.
“It’s still early days but I think the Premier League’s top four this season will be Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in any order,” said Merson Sportskeeda.
‘Obviously Chelsea will have a thing or two to say, but we will have to wait and see how Potter fares at Stamford Bridge.
– As for Manchester United, I don’t think they will make it because they still have a lot of work to do in terms of their squad.
‘They have won four league games in a row, including wins against Liverpool and Arsenal, but I am not yet convinced by them.
“Arsenal are good and I believe they are in there for the long term, while I’m still backing Liverpool to turn it around in the coming weeks to secure a UEFA Champions League place.”
