The air quality in the UAE is very good and is improving due to the existing national efforts in many sectors affecting air quality, as the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is working to formulate the national air quality strategy 2021-2031, and here an important The forward question arises: Will we be able to practice sports in the future, hiking or choosing accommodation with air of the highest quality?
Environmental efforts respond that in the near future an intelligent air quality monitoring and forecasting system will be adopted so that residents can see ongoing updates and thus choose places to go for picnics, training dates, residences and others.
The results of air quality data for the year 2021 in Dubai showed an improvement of 16.66% through a decrease in the average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide “NO2” by 10% and a decrease in the average concentrations of suspended particles with a size of 10 microns by 18% , and the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi seeks to reach 90% of the days of the year that meet national air quality standards by the end of 2025.
air quality index
An indicator for reporting air quality in a particular area that tells you how clean the air is and what health effects it has associated with it.
It is calculated from the highest concentration of the five pollutants: carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ground ozone and particles with a diameter of less than 10 micrometers.
Engineer Aisha Al Abdouli, director of the green development department at the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment, said the air quality in the UAE is very good and constantly improving due to the existing national and local efforts in many sectors affecting air quality and there are many national and local strategies that contribute to improving air quality These strategies guide national and local efforts in many areas, including energy strategy, transport strategy, waste strategy, circular economy and other strategies in different sectors that contribute directly or indirectly to raising and improving air quality levels.
She added: Extensive research in areas related to air quality helps to identify and identify sources that affect air quality to develop plans and projects that will reduce or limit emissions that affect air quality, and on the other hand update some specifications related to types of fuels, vehicles, devices and others also contributed by increasing efficiency, improving air quality and reducing emissions.
She stated that the ministry launched the air quality platform in September 2020, where the platform reviews the state of air quality in the country in real time through the air quality index, which is a simplified representation of data to determine the extent of air quality in the country. each station, and the platform currently includes 31 stations that monitor the ambient air quality distributed nationwide. The Ministry, in collaboration with the National Center of Meteorology and the competent authorities operating air quality monitoring stations in the country, is seeking to increase the number of stations connected to the platform with a target of 50 stations. There are also a number of projects. within the framework of the National Air Quality Strategy 2021-2031, which the Ministry and the competent municipalities will continue to work on immediately after the approval strategy in order to achieve the goals associated with the strategy.
Al-Abdouli explained that the ministry is working to formulate the national air quality strategy 2021-2031 with the aim of defining the course of action in the next phase and drawing up a roadmap to lead and coordinate the efforts of federal and local authorities and the private sector to monitor and control air quality effectively and mitigate pollution to protect human health and ecosystems. The strategy includes four axes: outdoor air quality, indoor air quality, ambient noise and odors. These axes are based on three foundations: monitoring, control and mitigation.
She pointed out that in September last year, the ministry launched the roadmap project to establish a system to monitor, verify and report greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants, as this system is the first of its kind at national level in the UAE and the project aims to increase efforts at the state level to reduce greenhouse emission rates Heat and work at the federal level within a framework and a general umbrella that depends on indicators and clear analytical reports for monitoring, verification and reporting, and the system will provide valuable information through which the state can meet its international reporting obligations in the context of increased transparency under the Paris Agreement.
She stated that last year there was a slight improvement in air quality as the share of green days in the first half of 2020 was around 87%, while the percentage in the same period in 2021 was around 89%, and in terms of sulfur dioxide. emissions, the percentage of compliance with the stated standard In the first half of 2020 was about 93%, while the percentage achieved in the same period last year was 99%, while the percentage of compliance with the standard specified for nitrogen dioxide emissions during the first half of 2020 was about 90%, while the percentage achieved for 2021 In the same period 98%.
The results of the air quality data for the year 2021 in Dubai showed an improvement in the air quality of some pollutants compared to 2019, when they saw an improvement in the air quality of 16.66% through a decrease in the average concentrations of nitrogen dioxide “NO2” by 10%, and a decrease in the average concentrations of suspended particles with a size of 10 microns by 18% and suspended particles with a size of 2.5 microns by 22%.
Daoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, told Al Bayan: The year 2021 witnessed the total number of days of clean air free of pollution with emissions of air pollutants by more than 9%, reflecting the extent of a concerted effort from all sectors to implement emission reduction initiatives within the air quality strategy 2017 – 2021, in addition to Dubai Municipality’s efforts to adopt quality initiatives to improve air quality, which always strive to achieve more environmental results that will support the air quality sector in Dubai.
He added: The air quality in Dubai is monitored through a network of stations located in strategic locations in the emirate, and the list includes 72 permanent stations to monitor the air environment, of which 41 are affiliated with Dubai Municipality and 31 from the private sector are electronically connected to the department’s database. includes sensors and techniques for monitoring a wide range of the air pollutants generated by the various manufacturing and operating processes in the Emirates and vary between nitrogen oxides and sulfur, ground ozone and suspended particles. carbon monoxide, odorous gases such as volatile organic compounds, ammonia and others.
There is a mobile smart monitoring station, supported by innovative communication tools that enable it to monitor real-time and directly connect to the department’s database, to store the monitored data continuously before it later passes through the technical analysis phase, and mobile station for monitoring of the air environment helped build a huge air quality database. It contributed to the development of contour maps for concentrations and levels of air pollutants, effectively helping to enable decision-makers to formulate legal frameworks and draft air quality legislation, in addition to drawing up future development and planning plans on a well-researched scientific basis. basis, in line with the environmental challenges of the emirate.
He added: The mobile environment monitoring station is the first of its kind in the region in terms of design and quality of monitoring techniques associated with it, and it is designed according to international specifications in relation to the prevailing climate conditions, which is often characterized by high temperatures and relative humidity, and the station works in shifts to strengthen the air environment monitoring system in Dubai.
The Director General of Dubai Municipality said: We work in Dubai Municipality, as part of community, environment and health initiatives, to reduce the share of carbon emissions in the air, and the municipality’s efforts have helped to strengthen the air quality sector, in achieving the emirate’s leadership and global competitiveness in line with national trends and the Dubai Strategic Plan 2021., which seeks to achieve the national target of the air quality index, 90% clean air by 2021.
The Emirate of Abu Dhabi has an advanced position globally in terms of air quality free from pollutants, control systems and comprehensive monitoring of air quality in all sectors. Therefore, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has identified in its Environmental Centennial Vision 2071, to make Abu Dhabi the best in the world to preserve the environment and achieve its goal for society to enjoy high quality From indoor air and through five future aspirations represented first in “No Pollutants the law through a set of legislation that is in line with local, national and global standards for all outdoor and indoor air pollutants and the protection of the ozone layer.
In a unique way, the “smart factory” project will change the routine management system in the industrial process and the production line, as the emirate through this project strives to control pollutants originating from industrial facilities using modern technology that feeds public authorities directly with all industrial sector data through smart systems. .
And because the sustainable future of Abu Dhabi is the subject of technology challenges, the “control room” project will work on remote sensing monitoring, intelligent real-time mechanisms for collecting and fully automating air and noise pollution data, integrating systems between public sectors, and providing intelligent analytics in real-time, which will play a key role in the decision-making process.
Through the “environmental traffic systems”, the direction to address air quality will be changed to wider lanes, through smart regulation and control of traffic systems, and by taking measures to reduce pollution and noise caused by the transport sector and promote the concept of switching to high-speed and environmentally friendly public transport. Hyperloop, sustainable trains, vehicles, aircraft and ships.
These future projects did not exclude housing and residential areas Through the project “improved ventilation”, which is based on integrating indoor air quality systems in buildings, homes and enclosed public spaces for real-time readings of their levels, intelligent analysis of their sources and connecting them with the environmental health system in emirate, innovation in ventilation practices will be promoted Nature and air purifiers, leading to a futuristic city flying with high quality air at the UAE Centennial.
In a related forward-looking context, the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency seeks to reach 90% of the days per year that meet national air quality standards by the end of 2025, as the Air Quality 2021 report recently released by the Authority indicates that it was able to: to collect samples of fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 microns and determine their source in Abu Dhabi. It is a key indicator for the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and the UAE, where the biggest challenges and concerns for air quality are the high concentrations of fine particles suspended in the air and the earth’s ozone. Through 20 fixed air quality monitoring stations every minute and measuring 275 indicators for more than 70 activities, the data collection speed increased. The percentage of accurate air is 99% and the authority was able to provide 144.5 million accurate data points annually and 1.2 million valid data points in a special database.
