Marie Claire has released their new photo and interview with SHINee’s Onew!
By comparing the differences between his latest solo album “DICE” and his debut album “VOICE”, Onew shared: “I prepared this [new album] with the hope that other people would feel this too [difference]. When one thinks of Onew, people would probably have foreseen a lyrical ballad or a song with a slow tempo. This time, I tried to find the middle ground between Onew and SHINee. “
He continued, “SHINee is a team with definite performance and character. How should I say this? If SHINee is a completely light color, I tried to find a bit of a pastel color. Before this I think my color was a bit blurry. I “I think this album is the moment I leave my first footprint to find my own color. Since this is my first time promoting a solo album, I would like to expand my spectrum.”
Since SHINee debuted in 2008, Onew has been asked if he views his fans differently now that they have been active in the industry for so long. He replied: “The basic aspects have not changed, but I think the feelings I feel have changed a bit. I am the type to relate and immerse myself deeply in the feelings of others. For example, if someone looking very happy on me, I feel happy too. [My b-side] ‘In the Whale’ captures that desire. The feeling of ‘we can overcome this together, I want us to be happy like this’. “
Onew elaborated on how he constantly strives to do better, saying, “I want to do incredibly well. But by my standards, I still do not feel so good. While I sang, I never think I was completely satisfied. [with my own performance]. That’s why I want to keep filling it. ”
He shared: “In the past, I even thought this is the extent of my talent and I can not improve from here. But from a certain moment I realized that I started as SHINee to sing and that singing was what I enjoyed “Since I’ve turned what I like best into a career, it’s a happy thing. I’m glad I could do it.”
Onew continued, “With the thought that I will definitely be happier if I improve and am more satisfied with my singing, I still practice my vocals now. In addition, I want to make music that has a positive impact. These days they say many people experience COVID-19 blues.We have to meet people and share our pain, loneliness and sadness but because of COVID-19 I am sure there are many people who tolerate it alone “I want my music to be a hope for these people too. To love others more and treat them with a kinder heart. That is also why I also try to change a lot.”
Onew credited this desire to have a positive impact on his parents and shared, “Even though it’s the people I share everything with who laugh and cry with me in hard times and happy times, I’m still shy to say that I love them.”
He continued: “But I can not hesitate and just have to act. My parents have grown older, and from a certain point on I began to think that I would not be able to live with my parents forever. In the beginning, I was also just like, ‘I should go home often.’ Then it became: ‘I was going home and eating with my parents’, and after that, ‘I had to make them a meal myself, we were going to karaoke after eating’. That’s how I gradually ended up making more things. “
Although he was 14 years into his career, Onew described his album “DICE” as a start and only at 50 percent of everything he wants to achieve. Since he has already achieved so much, the interviewer reassured Onew that he did not always have to try anything new. Onew replied, “But there is this compulsion. I think it may be because I am SHINee. I started ‘VOICE’ with the idea that I would let go of that compulsion for new things. When I then prepared my second album, I thought I would be able to do more things in the future if I did something different than last time.While I can, I will do everything I can.I will try to find what I like in every moment. ”
When asked about SHINee’s influence on his solo music, Onew said, “It’s the driving force that makes me think. Because I had my members, I’m able to be here now, and because I had my members, I’m we would be able to be together as SHINee. If I did not have SHINee, I would not have been able to make the music I wanted. As time goes on, the picture of my performance can change a lot. However, I would like to protect the scene for a very long time. ”
In Onews’ last interview with Marie Claire, he spoke of being “SHINee-like.” For this interview, he expanded on being “Onew-like” when commenting: “I think being ‘Onew-like’ shows a good image, even if the pace is a bit slow. I have an active promotion period and a not. “Active period. In my inactive period I would like to show a lot, but I tend to be a perfectionist at a slow pace. Instead, I assure you that I will never show you less of me.”
Finally, Onew talked about the need to really feel an emotion in order for it to be properly communicated to others. He elaborated: “You must unconsciously radiate happy energy so that listeners can feel genuine and smile. Just because you smile does not mean you are happy.”
He confessed: “Previously, I thought I deliberately had to smile in any situation. Now I have learned that other good things happen when I express my own thoughts more and end up smiling as a result. “now I do not like when bad energy comes into me. I honestly try to express what I do not like and I find it uncomfortable to move on while taking responsibility.”
