A Virginia man visiting New York City was reportedly shot in the head in broad daylight after an “intense” altercation with a woman. The tragedy was so shocking to the man’s family that his brother suffered a cardiac arrest when he was notified of the death.

“I saw a quarrel,” neighbor Manny El Grande told the New York Daily News about what happened before Ronald Thomas, 27, was shot and killed in New York City. “I just said it might be like a relationship, things are going on … it was not my problem, so I kept going.”

Thomas was fatally shot on the Upper West Side on Sunday while sitting in his Mercedes-Benz GLA 250. He had reportedly gotten into an “intense” altercation with a woman who was escalating when an armed man drove up to a dead end road outside Frederick Douglass Houses around 12:15 a.m. and shot at Thomas, the New York Daily News reported.

Thomas was shot in the head and the gunman took off shortly after. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the NYPD.

A neighbor spotted Thomas’ body after hearing shots, and a woman was seen crying on the spot while police investigated, the business reported.

“I’m not even coming outside anymore,” resident Maria Beltran told the outlet. “I just want to get out of here. I’m going to the store right now and then I’m going straight home.”

Thomas, a native of the Bronx, was visiting the city after moving to Glen Allen, Virginia. When his family members in Virginia were alerted to his death, his older brother went into cardiac arrest, according to Frederick Douglass House President Carmen Quinones.

“The oldest brother found out, now he’s in the hospital with cardiac arrest,” Quinones told the New York Daily News. “The mother is with him. So the older son is already in the hospital behind this.”

Quinones has been in contact with the family and said the brother is in critical condition.

“Everyone here is crushed,” Quinones added. “We do not know him, yet we are crushed because this is a person’s child.”

One of Thomas’ cousins was shocked by the tragedy and described it as “nuts”.

“It’s a tragedy,” Dwayne Martin said. “This is crazy because it’s unexpected. I do not know who he came to see what happened. He’s not that type of guy.”
