Nottingham: Man abuses disabled woman for asking him to get off lift

Police investigating a hate crime have released an image of a man they want to speak to.  See the SWNS story SWMRlift.  A disabled woman with cerebral palsy was using a lift at the Victoria Center in Nottingham when a man entered.  When the 72-year-old asked if she could use the lift alone, as she was afraid of contracting the coronavirus, the man became aggressive and allegedly made a disparaging comment about her disability.  Inspector Paul Gummer, who leads the City Center Neighborhood Policing Team, said:

A manhunt has been launched after a 72-year-old woman with cerebral palsy was mistreated in an elevator.

The victim was aggressively confronted after she asked the man if she could use the lift alone due to fears she would catch Covid.

He then made disparaging comments about her disability.

CCTV footage shows the man staring intently at the woman inside the lift.

He later kicks the lift at the Victoria Center arcade in Nottingham, apparently after the doors had closed.

Inspector Paul Gummer said: ‘This was a horrific incident which caused great distress and distress to the victim.

“Despite extensive enquiries, all efforts to trace the person responsible have been met with a negative result and therefore we are now asking the public for help in identifying him.”
