NFL Draft 2022: June Jones advises first-year head coaches on the process

The 2022 NFL Draft will have some head coaches go through the process for the first time as leaders of their teams instead of in an assistant role.

Chicago Bears ‘Matt Eberflus, Denver Broncos’ Nathaniel Hackett, Miami Dolphins ‘Mike McDaniel and Minnesota Vikings’ Kevin O’Connell will all be head coaches for the first time.

June Jones went through the draft process as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 1994 to 1996 and before that as an assistant coach. In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Jones had some advice for those coaches who want to influence the selection of players.

“I want to say draft needs as best you can,” Jones said. “I had a philosophy, and I still believe in this, that the only positions you draft (are) your quarterbacks, offensive linemen, pass-rushers and corners. And I think you get the rest down in the draft. Although there are some premier receivers this year, these top 15 picks, I think you can get just as good receivers third, fourth, fifth, sixth round.

“I would draft for positions high – corners and quarterbacks. I would not draft a running back, I would not draft receivers until late. And if a defensive end is a linebacker rushing past, I would put him in that category. I think the rest of the positions can find and you can draft the four or five seats. “

Jones said he did not think runbacks should be taken too high because of the number of players entering the draft listed on the position. San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell and New York Jets running back Michel Carter were among the best rushers among rookies last season, and both were selected in the fourth round or later.

“You’d better get O-line, you’d better get D-line, you’d better get corner kicks, and you’d better have a quarterback,” Jones said.

Jones has not coached in the NFL since the 1998 season with the Chargers. He had successful college runs with Hawaii and SMU and was recently the head coach of the Houston Roughnecks in the XFL in 2020, before the league closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
