Neon has acquired the rights to the social thriller The Royal Hotelcontributing Julia Garner (Ozark), Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones), and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix). The film is made by the author-director Kitty Greenwho has previously worked with Garner on The assistant. Green co-wrote the script Oscar Redding (Van Diemens Land).
Inspired by true events, “The Royal Hotel revolves around Hanna (Garner) and Liv (Henwick), best friends who backpack in Australia. After running out of money, Liv, looking for an adventure, persuades Hanna to take a temporary live-in job behind the bar at a pub called The Royal Hotel in a remote mining town in Outback. Barejer Billy (Weaving) and a host of locals give the girls a restless introduction to the Down Under drinking culture, but things get ugly when their jokes and behavior cross the border. Soon Hanna and Liv find themselves trapped in a disturbing situation that is rapidly growing out of their control. ”
Well, that sounds like every woman’s worst nightmare. The film, which starts shooting this summer in Australia, comes from See-Saw Films, which most recently produced the Oscar-nominated The power of the dog. Looking forward to checking out The Royal Hotel?
