Neighbors get the right to vote on housing plans | News

Neighbors are allowed to hold referendums on the style and size of outbuildings, new homes and remodeling on their street according to plans outlined in the Queen’s speech.

New laws will allow “street polls” on whether more attic conversions and conservatories can be built without full planning permission. Ministers hope this will encourage more intensive development by giving residents the opportunity to increase the value of their own homes.

A raid on major developers’ profits to fund schools, roads and operations will also be used to encourage residents to agree to more local housing construction, as ministers look for ways to minimize objections to new housing.

The bill on equalization and regeneration was one of the 38 enacted yesterday in the government’s legislative plan for the year.
