A Mississippi youth softball referee says she was pulled in the face by an angry mother after a softball game for girls 12 years and under this month.

The incident took place on the evening of April 9 in Laurel, Mississippi, when her mother, Kiara Nichelle Thomas, 32, began hurling ugly language across the field before challenging call from Judge Kristie Moore at Second Base.

“That she should [expletive] me up, “Moore, 47, told USA Today Sports.

Moore told police that Thomas threatened her several times during the game, according to an incident report from the Laurel Police Department. Moore later threw Thomas, but the mother got stuck and beat the referee after the match. Thomas later fled the scene.

After the fight, Moore took to Facebook, where she posted a picture of herself with a black eye.

“Soooo, it’s embarrassing if I have to be open and honest about it. But it’s real life, and it’s unfortunate that it’s reached this place,” she wrote.

“The next time you go to a tournament and you only have one referee on the court … that’s why. When you have brand new referees on the court who may not know everything they should know yet … that’s why When you do not feel that you have the quality of referees you should … that’s why. When the day comes when your child can not play a ball game because there are no more officials to call it .. .This is WHY, “she added.

“Before you post the next ‘funny’ meme about referees who stink, or are blind, or have missed calls on their phone or whatever it is, before you write about how a referee was so awful and awful and lost the game for you …… .why not sign up? Get out there and give it a try, “she continued. “I was beaten when I came off the field last night. There’s no excuse for this. If you think it’s ok, remove yourself from my friends list. Judges are not perfect. We never will be. But guess what? Nobody is .”

Thomas fled the scene after the incident, but a park and recreation officer took a picture of her license plate and vehicle, a black Chevrolet Crossover, according to the incident report.

The mother was stopped around 7.18pm and arrested on time for simple assault. Her mug picture showed she was wearing a “Mother of the Year” shirt.

Moore, who has been calling youth gambling for about a decade, says there has been an increase in violence against officials. Earlier this month, basketball players in Georgia were seen chasing and violently attacking a referee at a youth game.

“It’s just getting worse and worse,” she said. “Something needs to be done about this. It’s not just softball, baseball. It’s every official.”

Moore said over the weekend that the injury was not the worst part of the ordeal, it was seeing her children when she got home.

“They took a look at me and started crying,” Moore said.

“Mom, we do not want you to do this,” her children added, “we do not want you to be harmed.”
