Minnesota Toddler starts its own homemade lip gloss company – WCCO

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A girl from Minnesota is making a mark as an entrepreneur in just 3 years.

For AJ Smith, it all started a year ago.

“From the time she was 2 years old, she’s always been very interested in seeing me when I’m wearing makeup,” said AJ’s mother Angela Smith. “When she wanted to express herself, we thought of ways, how do we make it developmentally appropriate for her to explore makeup? Her father’s compromise was lip gloss and nail polish, so it was a sure way to let her explore. ”

So with the help of her co-creator, her twin brother Jax and her parents, AJ started making her own natural coconut oil lip gloss.

Her parents are both teachers, so it started as a teaching moment.

“It’s math, it’s science, it’s reading, it’s measuring, it’s so much more, when we do it as a family, we teach her she does not know, it’s just fun,” Angela said Smith.

And then the friends started asking about the practical project.

“The feedback we got from people is that this is great, you should share this with other people,” Angela Smith said.

And they did. AJ started working and diversifying its product base.

“We have all the colors, red and orange and yellow and blue and indigo and violet,” said AJ Smith.

They were licensed and now sell products. They chose their logo for a very important reason.

“We’re really big on representation and at the age she’s at, how much is out there she can see of herself,” Angela Smith said.

Now other little girls who look like her can be reflected in this budding beauty line.

“It’s definitely so much more than lip gloss, it’s about creativity, self-expression, building her self-confidence,” Angela Smith said. “We try to show parents how to teach your child to be creative, how to promote self-expression, and that’s what Beautifly stands for, so that’s what we’re about.

And don’t worry, it’s not all work. As a 3-year-old, she has found out – a product with a purpose and a perfect balance between work and private life.
