Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorkas said “there is no doubt” that he could have more effectively communicated the purpose of his newly created “disinformation” board after critics formulated it as a repression of free speech.

Mayorkas said on “Fox News Sunday” that the Biden administration “could have done a better job of communicating what it does.”

Mayorkas announced that DHS set up a disinformation board to combat online disinformation during its testimony Wednesday before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security.

“The goal is to bring the resources to [DHS] together to address this threat, “he said during the hearing, adding that the department is focused on spreading disinformation in minority communities ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

Mayorkas explained Sunday that the board specifically addresses “disinformation that poses a security threat to the home country.”

“Disinformation from Russia, from China, from Iran, from the cartels,” he said.

“This is a working group that takes best practice to ensure that our work, when dealing with disinformation that poses a threat to the home country, does not violate freedom of expression, does not violate civil rights or civil liberties,” he continued. “It’s not about speech, it’s about the connection to violence. That’s what we need to address. You know, an individual has the freedom to express anti-Semitic rhetoric. What they do not have the right to do is take hostages in a synagogue, and that’s where we get involved. “

Mayorkas said he had full confidence in the objectivity of Nina Jankowicz, the board’s chief executive, who this week faced backlash from previous tweets about the Hunter Biden laptop story and Christopher Steele’s debunked dossier.

“I do not question her objectivity,” Mayorka said Sunday. “There are people in the department who have a wide range of views and they are incredibly dedicated to the mission. We are not the opinion police. She has testified before Congress a number of times, she is recognized as a huge authority and we are very lucky to have her. “
