Manchester United transfer news LIVE plus new manager Erik ten Hag ‘measures’ Ajax defender

OPINION: Erik ten Hag has another young man to consider at United

No matter how bad things go at Manchester United, the success of their youth academy will always provide a bit of comfort and hope for a bright future ahead. While the first team has failed deeply in this campaign, there has been more success at the youth level, especially with the U18s’ journey to the FA Youth Cup final culminating in a showpiece event against Nottingham Forest in less than two weeks. .

United have not reached the final of the prestigious youth competition in 11 years. The last time they did, a team of stars, including Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, won in a victory over Harry Maguire’s Sheffield United team. In a decade, United’s first team could very well include some of those who have reached the FA Youth Cup final this season. Only time will tell if these latest hopefuls will ever be able to match the heroism of the class in 2011.

Success at the youth level, however, does not guarantee star status at the senior level, and this summer United may well look at strengthening their side with a couple of young people who are already well accustomed to the pressure of ordinary first-team football.
