Erik ten Hag is ready to plunder the Eredivise for a third time this summer in a bid to strengthen his Manchester United’s squad before the transfer window closes next month.

The Dutchman has endured a frustrating summer, with United failing to deliver their new manager a number of his top targets.

Ten Hag have so far been armed with just three new signings following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen and Tryell Malacia.

However, United failed to secure the signings of Ten Hag’s former Ajax charges Antony and Jurrien Timber, while hopes of signing Frenkie de Jong, after a chaotic summer-long pursuit, appear to be fading fast.

The gaping holes in the Ten Hags’ squad were brutally exposed by Brighton on Sunday as United suffered a chastening 2-1 defeat to the Seagulls at Old Trafford.

Speculation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future continues to cast a shadow over the start of Ten Hag’s tenure, while an injury to Anthony Martial, who had enjoyed a promising pre-season, has provided another headache.

While the need for midfield reinforcements is obvious, Ten Hag are also keen to strengthen their attack with both Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho starting the new season in stunning fashion.

In response to Sunday’s setback, according to ESPN, Ten Hag have sanctioned a move for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo, who is valued at £35m by his current club.

The 23-year-old scored 21 goals in 47 games last season and has been capped seven times by Holland at senior international level.

Arsenal had been monitoring Gakpo’s situation and remain interested in signing a wide forward this summer after missing out on Raphinha, who joined Barcelona from Leeds United.

Gakpo, now coached by former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, looked set to stay at PSV for another season but could be turned by genuine Premier League interest, although his club will not accept an offer below their asking price .

United, meanwhile, look set for another setback with Marko Arnautovic, who emerged as a shock target at the weekend, likely to remain at Bologna, according to his manager Sinisa Mihajlovic.

‘I would be happy for Marko [in case he joins United] but I don’t think he will go,’ said Mihajlovic.

‘I spoke to Arnautovic about Man Utd’s proposal – if he leaves we’ll see… but I think he’ll stay.’
