Following several allegations that Lyon were interested in West Ham United’s Issa Diop, other clubs are now ready to take part in the race.
AS Monaco is reportedly one of them, according to Foot Mercato, but so is Manchester United.
It’s no secret that many, many changes will take place at Old Trafford this summer, and after some pretty awful defensive performances lately, there may be a clear out in defense.
Among the names being looked at, according to the website, is Diop, who was previously interesting to Manchester United when they decided to put their money on Harry Maguire instead.
Since then, the Frenchman has fallen into the pecking order under David Moyes, but that does not mean his stock has necessarily fallen, as the Red Devils are still there.
It is recalled that Manchester United ‘already approached’ him earlier, but they ‘still follow the Toulouse native with interest’.
This seems to stem from Ralf Rangnick himself, who was to help Erik ten Hag perform the open heart surgery he has previously mentioned.
The German manager and soon-to-be adviser has previously kept an eye on Diop as he ‘followed him closely as he worked for Leipzig and always had his name in mind’.
Now, ‘the goal would therefore be to strengthen the defensive sector’ and that the West Ham defender ‘is trying to win a place in the starting 11’.
The problem here is that Diop, should he leave Hammers, will mainly ‘aim for a starting place’ at his next club.
This is where someone like AS Monaco, who is also thinking of a move, could come and convince him to ignore Old Trafford’s enchantment.
Something to think about, but if Manchester United want ready-made Premier League-experienced defenders who still have room to grow, the 25-year-old (with only a year left on his contract at London Stadium) could be an interesting option.
