Manchester City and Real Madrid play Champions League classic

Football fans drooled on social media as Real came back from 2-0 down to leave a draw in balance for the return leg in Madrid. As Real goal scorer Karim Benzema wrote on social media after the match: “The game has only just begun.”

“As a football fan, it was a great football match,” Real manager Carlo Ancelotti told reporters.

“As manager of Madrid, I have to take into account that we … conceded two goals very early. But we take three goals to the Bernabeu. We now hope to reach the final.”

Kevin De Bruyne’s excellent diving header gave City the lead after just 94 seconds. With the clock showing 11 minutes played, a great pass from the defensive line of Gabriel Jesus resulted in a counterattack that was smoothly brought under control by Real in the center of the opposition’s penalty area, but his finish went high. The 13-time champion, the most successful club in the history of the competition, had never before conceded two goals into the Champions League so quickly.

City, who were looking to win the Champions League for the first time, were breathtaking and should have led 3-0, but Pep Guaridiola’s team was unable to convert promising chances and Real struck back – Benzema steered the ball down to the bottom corner to halve the deficit before the break.

Eight minutes after the restart City scored again, Phil Foden nodding home from Fernandinho’s post before Vinicius Jr. scored a brilliant goal to make it 3-2.

However, there were to be more goals and drama.

In the 74th minute, Bernardo Silva beat Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a sizzling effort in the top corner, after which Benzema scored his second of the night – a penalty kick that will be repeated again and again.

Aymeric Laporte was penalized for handling inside the area and Benzema stepped up with a ‘Panenka’ – a chipped penalty in the middle – with eight minutes left.

The Frenchman had missed two penalty kicks in Real’s La Liga win over Osasuna six days earlier, so it was amazing to try such a spot kick in such a stressful situation.

In a comment to BBC Radio 5 live, former English striker Alan Shearer said: “All I can do is laugh and think: ‘I can not believe Karim Benzema has just done that’ … That audacity! It was incredible. “

It was an appropriate way to end a special evening.

Pep Guardiola has yet to win the Champions League with Manchester City.

“It was a great match for both sides. We did a lot of good things. Unfortunately we conceded goals and we could not score more. But it is two matches and we have another one in a week,” Guardiola told reporters.
