Incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is set to give Donny van de Beek a chance to revive his career at Old Trafford next season.

Van de Beek, 25, has been fighting for the Red Devils since signing from Ajax in 2020 and was sent out on loan to Everton in January after being considered a surplus to the demands of interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

But his former boss at Ajax – Ten Hag – is set to take over at United this summer, and according to The Telegraph, the 52-year-old plans to include the midfielder in his pre-season squad.

Van de Beek will be happy to have a new opportunity to impress in Manchester after his limited playing time at Old Trafford and after falling behind as Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Fred in the pick order.

In two years at Manchester United, he has only played 27 Premier League games and scored two goals compared to his productive Ajax appearance, where he played 175 games – many under Tan Hag – and scored 41 goals.

Since joining Everton on a six-month loan deal, Van de Beek has failed to secure a permanent starting place at Goodison Park, having only made six Premier League appearances as his career continues to slide in the wrong direction.

Earlier in the season, Van de Beek spoke of his frustration at not being able to make an impact at Old Trafford.

He said: ‘It’s not easy if you do not play, not even for confidence and all that. I train really hard every day.

‘I’ve asked to play more. You can train hard every day, but in the end you need playing time.

‘If you only play once a month, you can not show your best form – playing is really important.’
