Man killed by stabbing at Dave & Buster’s in Times Square, police said
NEW YORK – A New York man was stabbed to death inside a Times Square Dave & Buster’s after an incident took place at the popular arcade restaurant, police said.
In a statement Sunday, the New York City Police Department identified Allen Stanford, 39, of Manhattan, as the victim of Saturday’s attack.
Jesse Armstrong, 41, was arrested and charged with murder, police said Sunday. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
Police received a call Saturday around 10:45 p.m. about an ongoing assault and arrived at Dave & Buster’s, where Stanford had been stabbed in the chest.
Stanford was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead, police said.
The New York Times and the Post, citing unnamed politicians, reported that Stanford and Armstrong began fighting in the price range of Dave & Buster’s. Stanford reached a high shelf with a prize box falling near Armstrong and a young girl, the newspapers reported. The Post reported that surveillance cameras captured the incident on video.
The two men then started fighting, and Armstrong pulled out a knife and stabbed Stanford, police told the newspapers. The Post reported that a Dave & Buster employee identified Armstrong after he fled to a nearby subway station.
Dave & Buster’s is a restaurant and venue where guests can win tickets to swap prizes. The Times reported that a drone was the prize box that fell and led to the fight.
The stabbing comes amid a drop in the number of homicides, but an increase in assaults in New York City this year. Murders have dropped by 13%, but crimes have increased by 21% so far this year, according to NYPD statistics. Crime is still far lower than its highs in the city in the 1980s and 1990s.
