EXCLUSIVE: Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., Has enacted legislation to close a new board of the Department of Homeland Security, designed to police misinformation.

Boebert’s legislation would defuse the “Disinformation Governance Board” and ensure that the federal government has no role in defining what the truth is for the American people.

“This kind of thing is scary. We in Congress have the power of the wallet. It’s our duty to shut this department down right away,” Boebert told Fox News Digital Friday in an interview. “I urge the leadership of the Republican Party leader [Kevin] McCarthy, whip [Steve] Scalise and others – to join me and call for this department to be closed down and defined. “

Representatives of McCarthy did not immediately respond to whether he backs this bill or the efforts to direct DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which Boebert also wants. Scalise supports Boebert’s bill.

Both Scalise and McCarthy recently signed a letter questioning Mayorkas’ suitability for office, but did not specifically raise a federal lawsuit.

The issue is a recently announced Disinformation Governance Board, which DHS says will address misinformation from Russia and misinformation circulated by human traffickers to get migrants to cross the US-Mexico border, according to the Associated Press. Nina Jankowicz, who previously served as a disinformation fellow at the Wilson Center, will chair the board as CEO.

Republicans – who were already afraid of censorship after Big Tech’s efforts to shut down the New York Post’s story on Hunter Biden’s laptop after Democrats called it Russian disinformation – were appalled by the new department.

“No tax dollars should go to where Biden can use the power of the federal government to silence truthful stories, as Big Tech did with the Hunter Biden story,” Boebert said.

Boebert compared the effort to government surveillance from George Orwell’s “1984” novel.

“The Democrats took it [book] not as a warning, but as a guide, “she said.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki defended the Disinformation Governance Board and Jankowicz and told Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich that the effort is a continuation of the work of former President Trump’s administration.

“We know there have been a number [disinformation] out there on a number of topics, I mean, including COVID for example, and also choice and eligibility, “Psaki said.

Psaki described Jankowicz, claiming she is “an expert in online disinformation” and insisting that she is “a person with extensive qualifications.”

Jankowicz suggested during the 2020 presidential election that Hunter Biden’s laptop, which has been verified by several media outlets, was a “Russian influence”.

Jankowicz retweeted her comment Wednesday, claiming she simply live-tweeted the presidential debate between Biden and Trump.

Boebert is gathering co-sponsors for its legislation and plans to formally introduce it next week.

“This is really a department of propaganda,” Boebert said of the disinformation board. “To say that the federal department has an influence on what is right and what is wrong. What is truth and what is not. This is a very dangerous place we have come to.”
