Kim Kardashian closed out the Met Gala’s red carpet on Monday night while wearing Marilyn Monroe’s 1962 dress.
The reality TV star and the mogul’s appearance was highly anticipated after rumors began to swirl about her appearance. And in true Kardashian fashion, she exceeded expectations when she arrived in the gold dress that Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.
“It’s 60 years old,” Kardashian told La La Anthony below Vogue‘s vibrant red carpet coverage. “I had this idea to put it on and try it on, and then they came in with armed guards and gloves. I tried it on and it did not suit me.”
While the dress by costume designer Jean-Louis was first ordered for Monroe for $ 1,440, it was later sold for over a million dollars as part of the actress’ property sale in 1999. In 2016, it was sold at Juliens Auktioner for $ 4.8 million and acquired by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum.
“I’m a big fan of auctions and I own several JFK pieces so I know the owner of Julien’s. He was able to connect me [with Ripley’s] and that was how the conversation started, “Kardashian said Vogue during an exclusive interview Sunday night.
Ripley’s eventually agreed to lend the dress to Kardashian and flew it out to her home in Calabasas to try. The original assembly did not go as planned.
“I always thought she was extremely curvy. I imagined I might be smaller in some places where she was bigger and bigger places where she was smaller. So when it did not suit me, I would cry because it was not at all can not be changed, “Kardashian told the publication.
When it came to planning a backup look, she refused to consider the idea at all. “It was this or nothing,” she said, explaining that she had to wear “the original naked dress,” and was willing to do whatever it took to make it happen.
“I had to lose 16 pounds today to be able to fit this,” she said as she chatted with Anthony. “It was like a role. I was determined to take care of it.”
She also told the publication about the strenuous diet and exercise plan she followed to make it happen.
“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, remove all sugar and all carbs completely and just eat the purest vegetables and proteins,” she said. “I did not starve myself, but I was so strict.”
A month later, she had another seizure. “I would cry tears of joy when it went up.”
Kardashian dedicated herself to the look in other ways, including spending the day before the event dyeing her hair platinum blonde like Monroes. “I spend all day dyeing my hair, 14 hours in a row,” she said.
She also had to make adjustments to her usual routine of getting ready before stepping up the stairs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art – most notably when she arrived at the museum in a dressing gown to put on her dress in a private fitting room.
“I’m extremely respectful of the dress and what it means to American history. I would never want to sit in it or eat in it or have any risk of damaging it, and I do not want that kind of body makeup on. I usually do, “she said. “Everything had to be specifically timed and I had to practice walking up the stairs.”
Kardashian’s shocking moment was complete when she arrived arm-in-arm with her boyfriend Pete Davidson, a few days after making their debut on the red carpet as a couple for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He even helped her up the stairs and planned the perfect meal after the gala after Kardashian spent weeks on a diet.
“Since I have not eaten carbs or sugar for about three weeks, we are eating pizza and donut feast back at the hotel,” Kardashian Anthony said.
And while Kardashian plans to stay blonde for a while, she will soon drop Monroe’s dress in favor of some replicas that she’ll have to wear all night.
“I have a copy of the dress she wore to the 1962 Oscars,” she said Vogueand notes that it might be her favorite outfit for the pizza party in the hotel room.
