Jamie Redknapp urges Chelsea to sign the next Didier Drogba

Jamie Redknapp says Chelsea will not challenge for the Premier League title until they find a clinical finisher like Didier Drogba.

On Thursday night, the Blues played a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League, but failed to convert several chances to win the match.

This season, Chelsea have struggled to score £ 100m, who have picked up Romelu Lukaku in a run since joining from Inter Milan last summer.

Redknapp, the former Liverpool midfielder, believes that Chelsea’s inability to get the winner against United showed how Thomas Tuchel’s team desperately needs a strong striker.

He said on Sky Sports: ‘I think Thomas Tuchel will think about how they have not won this match. The amount of opportunities they had on the right side.

‘They felt that Romelu Lukaku would be the missing piece in the puzzle, the man who would get them 20, 25 goals to lift them to the title race, and it has not succeeded.

‘Werner is not a natural finisher. Havertz, I love his movement. But they do not have the goal scorer like a Drogba or Costa who will give you the 20 or 25 goals you need to win the title, and that is really where they have fallen short. ‘

Between 2004 and 2012, Drogba scored over 100 league goals for Chelsea as he led the club to three title triumphs. Meanwhile, Diego Costa scored 20 league goals in both seasons, and the West Londoners finished in the top between 2015 and 2017.

By comparison, Timo Werner has only scored 10 league goals since joining the Blues in 2020. Meanwhile, Lukaku has only hit the net five times this season.

Speaking after the draw with United, Tuchel complained about his team’s lack of recklessness up front, claiming they were not ‘determined enough’.

He said: ‘A team deserved to win and that was us. We did not take it. It was a very, very good performance, but we were not decisive enough. We lacked a bit of determination in the box to win the match.

‘It happens sometimes. It is up to us to learn from it. You need to be clinical to get the reward. We have to live with a point, but that is not a fair result. ‘
