India’s neutrality towards Ukraine rooted in deep ties with Russia, persistent distrust of the United States

A Vice President US National Security Adviser recently arrived in New Delhi to pressure India to take a more forceful stance towards Russia in the context of the Ukraine war. His meeting with the Indian Foreign Minister was cordial and underlined the strong ties between Washington and New Delhi.

But Indian officials said they later felt blinded when in public comments Daleep Singh warned of “consequences” for countries that helped circumvent sanctions. “Such words are never used in diplomacy,” said an Indian official who was involved in the discussions. “It came as a surprise.”
