A group of members of the Republican House traveled to the Texas-Mexico border, describing the “emotional anguish” that border patrol agents incur as a result of violent human trafficking and drug trafficking, while urging Democrats and President Biden to act before Title 42 ends May 23. .

The group, led by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., On Monday toured the border with agents he said were “pushed to their limits.” They begged Biden and other House Democrats to extend Section 42, a public health order that is due to expire in 30 days and that has been used since March 2020 to quickly expel a majority of migrants at the border due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We welcome and wish to ask the Democrats to join us,” the Republican leader urged. Republicans are pushing for their Democratic counterparts to sign a discharge petition to bring a bill to the floor to force a vote to maintain Title 42, which requires the support of 218, or the majority, of lawmakers.

“We just need a handful of Democrats to join to bring the bill to the vote. So if you think Title 42 should not be repealed, do not say it in a press release, say it in an action that could make a difference, “McCarthy said.

Legislators’ trip coincided with the recent death of a Texas National Guard specialist who drowned while trying to save the lives of migrants taking the trip from Mexico.

Texas Army National Guard specialist Bishop E. Evans, 22, disappeared near Eagle Pass on Friday while trying to rescue two migrants who “appeared to be drowning while crossing the river from Mexico to the United States.” according to the Texas Military Department. His body was found Monday.

Evans “did not die in vain,” said the members, praising his heroism and prompt action and condoling with his grandmother.

House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., said the boat boundary patrol captains who led their trip to the river were the ones who found the body of Evans earlier in the day.

“Think of the emotional turmoil, the emotional anguish that these border patrol agents go through every day, in addition to the National Guard and their families. Our hearts are broken. Republicans in the House are united in securing the border and providing the support we need to our border patrol. in our community in South Texas and across our country, “Stefanik said.

McCarthy also criticized the Biden administration’s policy of providing mobile phones to illegal immigrants, which he is witnessing at the border. The White House confirmed last month that illegal immigrants are being provided with electronic devices, particularly cell phones, in an attempt by the administration to “track” and “check in” with them while awaiting an immigration lawsuit.

McCarthy was also asked about reporting last week by the New York Times, which included a leaked audio recording in which the GOP leader said he would recommend the former president resign after the January 6 Capitol uprising.

A journalist asked him if he was untruthful in denying the Times reporting when the tapes showed he was telling his GOP colleagues he would ask Trump to resign.

He replied, “The reporter never asked me that question. The reporter came to me the night before he published the book. And my understanding was that he said I was asking President Trump to resign. No, I never did, and it was. that I answered. “

“If you ask now, I told my members who would ask, ask them if I told any of them, if I told President Trump, the answer is no. I’m glad you asked that question. But what’s more important than anything that happened 15 months ago in a private conversation with about four other people is what’s happening here right now. “

Trump and McCarthy remain on good terms despite the recently released ties, according to a source who confirmed to Fox News Digital that the two spoke on the phone last week.

“You asked that question the same day we found Bishop Evans’ body. You asked that question the same day in less than a month, just a month from now, that they will raise the title 42,” he said. “I do not think that is what the American people are asking about. I think they want to know about what is going to happen here and how we will secure the border,” he concluded.
