Granite Xhaka has described winning Arsenal’s award as player of the month as ‘very special’ and thanked supporters for their votes.
The Swiss national team player took the award for key performances in the month of April, especially in the recent victories over Chelsea and Manchester United.
Xhaka scored Arsenal’s third goal from reach to secure a crucial 3-1 win over the Red Devils last weekend.
The result has led Mikel Arteta’s side to move into the driver’s seat in the race for the Champions League qualifier via the top four.
Xhaka has claimed the award, which fans voted for on Arsenal.com, with fellow Gunners midfielder Mohamed Elneny.
“I want to say thank you very much because you voted for me as the player of the month,” Xhaka said.
‘It’s very special to me, but I also want to say thank you for the support. Of course at home, but also outside.
‘We will try to reach our goals for this season.’
Xhaka has been a divisive figure among fans in the North London club, where the midfielder was stripped of the club’s leadership in 2019.
Despite constant links with a switch to Serie A club Roma, the 29-year-old recently insisted he is ‘100 per cent’ committed to Arsenal.
‘Arsenal are still in my heart, 100%. My challenge was never to change people’s opinions about me, but to help the team. And then after that, if anyone changed their mind because of it, so nice, ‘he told The Players’ Tribune.
‘I understand we will never be best friends, but I hope we can treat each other with honesty and respect. I want you to know that no matter what I do on the pitch, it’s coming from the right place. ‘
