Georgia GOP governor clash: Kemp brings in big money as he faces Trump-backed Perdue challenge

EXCLUSIVE: With just over three weeks left until the primary day in Georgia, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has replenished his formidable campaign war chest.

Kemp – the Conservative governor for the first time, who faces a primary challenge from former GOP senator David Perdue, who enjoys the backing of former President Donald Trump – dragged over $ 2.7 million into April for his re-election campaign. And the governor will report $ 10.7 million in cash on hand in his campaign coffers.

DURING THE ATTACK OF TRUMP, KEMP GETS REINFORCEMENTS

The fundraising figures, which were first shared nationally with Fox News Digital on Monday, cover the period starting April 5, after the end of Georgia’s legislative session, to the end of the month. Georgia’s governors, other state-elected officials and state legislators have for decades been barred from receiving contributions to their personal campaign committees during the legislative session.

Kemp raised $ 7.4 million from July 1, 2021 to January 10 this year – with $ 12.7 million in cash on hand – when the 2022 Legislative Assembly began. And he enjoyed a massive fundraising advantage over Perdue, which raised $ 1.1 million from its campaign launch in early December to late January, with around $ 1 million in cash. Perdue has not yet submitted their latest fundraising report.

“Our campaign has kept its legs on the gas in the month of April, following the brave leadership of the governor during the most conservative legislative session ever,” said Kemps campaign manager Bobby Saparow.

And Saparow predicted that “the momentum is with our campaign and we will continue to outperform our competition to secure victories in May and November.”

PERDUE SAYS THAT TRUMP WILL DO “EVERYTHING SHOULD” TO HELP HIM BEAT BATTLE

Kemp also has a big lead over Perdue in another crucial measure – the public opinion poll. The governor has a lead of as much as 25 points over Perdue in an average of the last three polls.

Four years ago, with the support of Trump, Kemp narrowly defeated Democrat Stacey Abrams to win the governorship. But Kemp earned Trump’s anger starting in late 2020, after the governor confirmed President Biden’s narrow victory in Georgia in the presidential election after several re-counts of the vote. Trump, who had unsuccessfully urged the governor and other top Republican officials in the state to overturn the results, has now returned to Georgia twice to campaign against Kemp.

Trump called for Perdue to challenge the governor for months, and last year he supported Perdue a day after the former senator launched his bid. Perdue declared his candidacy a few days after Abrams, a champion of suffrage and rising star of the Democratic Party, launched his second equal bid for governor.

In addition to Perdue, Kemp also faces primary challenges from three lesser-known candidates – Catherine Davis, Kandiss Taylor and Tom Williams. After Kemp and Perdue met in two debates in the past week, all five candidates shared the stage at a debate on Sunday, the last one ahead of the May 24 primary election.

The early voting in the primary election started on Monday and lasts until May 20th.
