Gary Neville accused Manchester United to “tap it” against Manchester City after Pep Guardiola’s side ran out 6-3 winners at the Etihad.

Hattricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden put City 6-1 ahead, before a late finish from Anthony Martial put some respectability on the scoreline for the visitors.

But the game was gone as Martial took some shine off the scoreline and United’s four match-winning run ended.

Erik ten Hag has been praised for the tactical adjustments he has made since the team’s defeats to Brentford and Brighton, but he stuck with the team that beat Arsenal at the Etihad today.

City deserved their win and played some of the best football of the Guardiola era in a first half that saw them go into the break with a 4-0 lead.

And Neville says the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story of the game because United ‘wasted’ the game in the first half.

Speaking of United’s late revival, Neville said: ‘It’s a consolation, City have made four changes, the game has opened up a bit.

United have scored three goals and were clearly better in the second half, but the story of the game is that he will [Ten Hag] look at the first half where his team froze and they arguably bottled it.

‘They were nowhere near this game or occasion and that will be the part of the game that he will analyze the most. To score 3 goals here is some consolation.’
