France’s Macron comfortably wins the second period

Emmanuel Macron comfortably won another term as France’s president, beating his right-wing extremist opponent Marine Le Pen by a share of 58.5% of the vote in Sunday’s vote. The 44-year-old centrist is the first French president to win re-election in 20 years. In front of jubilant supporters, he promised a new era, while acknowledging a need to address the issues that allowed his fiery populist opponent to demand more than 40% of the vote.
