Even in defeat, Marine Le Pen brings France’s far right closer to power

PARIS—Marine Le Pen did not achieve her goal of achieving France’s highest office, but her campaign laid the groundwork for the far right to become a lasting force in French politics.

With 41.5% of the vote, Mrs Le Pen won a larger share of the electorate than any right-wing extremist presidential candidate in post-World War II France. Thus, the 53-year-old politician turned a party that was once a fringe rebel into a real challenger.
