David Beckham has congratulated the England women’s football team for reaching the Euro 2022 final, while also revealing how they have ‘inspired’ his daughter Harper.
The former England men’s captain joined the country in celebrating the Lionesses’ victory in reaching the final of the 2022 Women’s European Championship following a stunning 4-0 win over Sweden in Sheffield.
Goals from Beth Mead, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo and Fran Kirby mean the team will be heading to a sold-out Wembley Stadium for the final on Sunday.
Beckham, 47, wrote on his Instagram story after the win: ‘What a night, congrats to the girls.’
He also shared his “favourite photo of a special night”, which showed forward Rachel Daly dancing in an English cowboy hat on the field.
Hours before the semi-final, the former Manchester United player shared a video message wishing the team luck and revealing how big a fan his daughter Harper, 11, who he shares with wife Victoria, is of the Lionesses.
“Hey Lionesses, this is David. I just wanted to send you a message first to say congratulations on an incredible tournament so far, it’s been so uplifting, it’s been so exciting and it’s been so inspiring,’ he said.
‘And for me personally, you know I have a daughter so it’s been incredible for her to be inspired by you girls and your achievements.’
He continued: ‘But it’s not just the girls who are inspired, the boys are also inspired by this and we all know that when big tournaments come around our country and our fans get behind us like no other.
‘It has really lifted the whole country.’
The former footballer added of the semi-final: ‘We’re all excited to watch it and I know there’s one person who’s really excited to watch it and that’s my daughter, Harper.
‘So thank you for inspiring her and good luck girls.’
Harper is known to share his father’s love of the game, with David previously sharing a video of the youngster showing off his football skills as a child to mark International Women’s Day.
However, she is not the only Beckham child with a passion for the sport, as David and Victoria’s son Romeo, 17, currently plays for Miami-based team Fort Lauderdale CF.
Other stars sending congratulatory messages to the Lionesses include Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney and Prince William.
