A funeral in Peru was dramatically interrupted after ‘knocking’ was heard from inside a coffin.

The family of Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca gathered in the city of Lambayeque to pay their last respects on April 26.

Rosa had been involved in a serious crash in the region’s Chiclayo-Picsi road.

The accident cost her brother-in-law her life, leaving her nephews with serious injuries.

She had been declared ‘dead’ after the horrific crash and was later loaded into a coffin prior to her funeral.

But as her relatives lifted the wooden structure onto their shoulders, they began to hear strange noises.

They lowered the coffin and opened the lid to find a faint but very lively, Rosa looked up at them.

Cemetery officer Juan Segundo Cajo said: ‘[She] opened her eyes and sweated. I immediately went to my office and called the police. ‘

Shocked relatives, Rosa, still in her coffin, hurried to the Referential Hospital Ferrenafe in Lambayeque.

When she was first there, it turned out that Rosa had faint signs of life, and she was hooked up to a vital machine by doctors.

But her condition worsened, and she died tragically only a few hours later.

Her family, who had to say goodbye twice, now demand answers.

They have expressed outrage to health chiefs that she was pronounced dead ‘in the first place’.

An unnamed aunt told local media in Lambayeque: ‘We want to know why my niece reacted yesterday when we took her to be buried.

‘We have the videos where she pushes and touches the coffin.’

Rosa’s family suspects she may have been in a coma after the crash, which could explain why she was pronounced dead the first time.

Police in Peru are now investigating what happened at Lambayeque Regional Hospital – where she was first treated – which led to her death.

Rosa’s three nephews, who were injured in the same crash as her, are said to be recovering in hospital but still in a serious condition.
