James Anderson insists he would love to return to the English Test squad under new captain Ben Stokes.

Stokes was named Joe Root’s successor last week, and cricket chief executive Rob Key has said the new skipper wants Anderson and Broad to be recalled.

Anderson and Broad, England’s two leading wicket-takers, were both left out of the West Indies tour in March, with the Roots’ team losing 1-0.

Lancashire bowler Anderson says Stokes is the obvious choice for the captain, describing his teammate as a ‘natural leader’ who has ‘respect for the group’.

“Stuart and I were hoping our careers were not over,” Anderson told BBC Sport. ‘So it’s nice to hear there’s a chance.

‘It still means we have to perform some performances here with our counties to prove we’re playing well enough to get into the final XI.

‘Because of the situation and not having people in these roles, one is just so unsure of what is going to happen. So now it’s really nice to have that clarity.

‘I would love to be a part of it. We’ve had some tough years, we’re at the bottom of the test championship. English cricket must return to win test matches. ‘

Wide has too responded to Stokes ‘appointment, saying:’ He’s someone you obviously follow anyway, he’s a manager in the locker room.

“If he takes the way he plays and trains, his positive attitude into his captaincy, it will be a really exciting thing for English cricket. He has a really good tactical brain, so I’m sure he will be exceptional . ‘

England’s Test team – which lost last winter’s Ashes series 4-0 – will face New Zealand, South Africa and India this summer.
