Chris Rock’s mother reacts to Will Smith’s apology and Oscar ban – The Hollywood Reporter

Chris Rock’s mother, Rose Rock, shares her thoughts about Will Smith beating his son at the 2022 Oscars a month a month away from the moment.

Rock, a writer and motivational speaker, told WIS that the comedian is doing well but is “still processing” the incident that prompted Smith to withdraw from the Academy. The organization has since announced that Smith, who won Best Actor for his performance in King Richardis banned from all events, including the Oscar ceremonies, for the next 10 years.

“I told someone that when Will hit Chris, he hit us all, but he really hit me,” Rose Rock said. “When you hurt my child, you hurt me.”

When Rock was asked what she would say to Smith, Rock replied, “I do have no idea what I was going to say other than, ‘What in the world were you thinking?’ Because you did a slap, but so many things could have happened. Chris could have gone back and fallen. You really could have been handcuffed. You did not think. You responded that your wife gave you the side eye and you went up and you made her day because she was overwhelmed with laughter when it happened. “

Regarding the 10-year ban, she said: “What does it mean? You do not even go every year.” Rock, who pointed out that she did not think the academy should have taken Smith’s Oscar away, went on to say that she was “really, really proud” of how her son was reacting at the moment.

She added that she did not think the apology Smith posted on her Instagram account the day after the ceremony felt genuine. “I feel really bad that he never apologized,” Rock said. “His people wrote a piece and said, ‘I apologize to Chris Rock,’ but that kind of thing is personal. You reach out.”

Smith’s slap followed after Chris Rock made a joke that his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, had a shaved head. The comedian has largely remained a mother since the Oscars.

Earlier this month, Chris’ brother told Kenny Rock Los Angeles Times that he did not find Smith’s excuse for being genuine.
