Chicago is experiencing the most violent weekend to date in 2022 with 8 murders and 42 people shot

Eight people were killed in Chicago, with a total of 42 people shot – including at least two teenagers – in what is said to have been Windy City’s most violent weekend year to date, according to police and reports Monday.

There were 32 shootings and eight murders reported from Friday at. 18:00 to Sunday at 11.59, shows Chicago Police Department statistics. Even before the end of the day on Sunday, the Chicago Sun-Times called it the city’s “most violent weekend this year.”

The victims include at least nine people who were injured in four drive-by shootings, the CPD said.

The driving incident with the highest number of victims was reported around 7.30pm on Saturday in the West Englewood neighborhood. Police said four men, ages 24 to 65, were standing on the sidewalk around West Garfield Boulevard when a gray-colored vehicle drove past and someone inside opened fire.

Two victims aged 42 and 48 each received multiple gunshot wounds; they were rushed to local hospitals but could not be rescued. The 24-year-old victim was shot in the back and left arm and was reported in serious condition, police said. The 65-year-old man was shot in the back three times and in the right leg twice. His condition is not immediately known, police said.

Meanwhile, two teens ages 16 and 17 were shot in separate incidents Saturday and Sunday, the CPD said. Both victims were expected to survive.

Total crime in Chicago has increased by 35% from year to date on April 17, the CPD said. But murders and shootings were the only two types of offenses that have so far experienced a decline from year to date.

The murders have fallen by 10% from 174 last year to 157 so far in 2022 per. April 17, CPD statistics show. Admissions have fallen by 15%, from 729 in 2021 to 622 so far this year.
