Birmingham man found with loaded weapon during visit to detective is jailed

A man has been jailed for five years after police found a loaded gun in his manbag – while he was going to his detective.

Jerome Powell was stopped on Bristol Road in Selly Oak on February 16 and arrested after firearms officers searched him and seized the weapon. He has now been jailed.

Powell admitted to having a loaded revolver while in custody, and told a sergeant at the custody desk that there was a bullet inside the gun.

Jerome Powell, 26, was jailed for five years at Birmingham Crown Court

The 26-year-old, from Portland Road in Birmingham, was charged with possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Wednesday (April 20) to five years in prison by Birmingham Crown Court.

Chief Inspector Leanne Lowe, from WMP’s regional unit for organized crime, said: “He may not have used the weapon, but it’s an offense to carry one, and I’m glad Powell has been put off for his actions.

“Youth violence must stop, a central part of it is prevention work as well as the intervention and removal of dangerous weapons from our streets.

“We will continue to intercept and harass criminals who believe it is acceptable to carry weapons and knives around.

“We also always look at the bigger picture, targeting organized crime groups and working with communities to prevent young people from getting involved in gun crime.”

West Midlands Police have urged members of the public who suspect someone may be linked to a firearm to contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
