Biden and Mayorkas must step up – our border is not ‘effectively managed’

On Thursday, Homeland Security Minister Alejandro Mayorkas told Congress that the Biden administration had “effectively managed” the ongoing border crisis. Since I have just returned from my second trip to the Southern Frontier since Joe Biden became President, I can tell you that the poor management of the Biden administration and open border policies not only caused the ongoing crisis at our border, but are now seeking to make it worse.

In Eagle Pass, Texas, my Republican colleagues and I saw the damage these policies cause to our border communities and our country.

We went to where the body of Special Bishop Evans was found earlier that morning. Spc. Evans, the brave 22-year-old Texas National Guardsman who dived into the river to rescue two illegal immigrants, exemplified the heroism of those who protect our borders.

We then met with a group of Eagle Pass residents who told us how the border crisis is upsetting their lives and businesses. A rancher who has lived on the border for more than 20 years told us he had never seen it so bad and did not feel safe on his own property. Every day he worries that his children are going outside. When he shared his story, he broke down in tears.

This is the reality of the Biden border crisis. These are the stories of its heartbreaking toll.

Our trip revealed the seriousness of this crisis.

We learned that there were 259,594 border attacks within the Del Rio sector in 2021 alone, more than the previous nine years combined.

Mayorca owes Congress and the American people answers as to why the Biden administration continues to undermine effective border security and how he will keep our country safe going forward.

And here’s another alarming thing we saw in Eagle Pass: The Biden Administration is supplying illegal immigrants with free iPhones. I watched as ICE agents unlocked phones using face recognition technology and handed them over to a group of people who had only been apprehended moments before. This seems to be part of the Biden administration’s “effectively managed” border responsibility for tracking down illegal immigrants: by giving them taxpayer-funded phones, they can easily discard.

The Biden administration’s approach to border security is an embarrassment and threatens the security of our nation. Worse, it is this administration’s own policy that has brought us to where we are now.

President Biden concluded Remain-in-Mexico, terminated “safe third country” agreements with Central America, and paid contractors not to build the wall. He abolished immigration enforcement and pushed for mass amnesty.

Now President Biden wants to end an important tool to repel hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants from entering the United States: Title 42.

It is difficult to imagine a more dangerous policy change. If the Biden border crisis is unsustainable today, what will it look like in a month?

It will get significantly worse and overwhelm a border patrol that is already stretched thin. Biden’s Department of Homeland Security prepares for 18,000 border crossings every day when Title 42 ends, more than double the current daily average.

It is doubtful whether President Biden has the authority to end Title 42. This week, a federal district court temporarily blocked the Biden administration’s decision to repeal Title 42. This is welcome news, but we should not be dependent on the courts. Congress must take immediate action to retain Title 42 and stop the border crisis created by Biden’s policies.

House Republicans have made securing the border a top priority. Since last year, we have introduced common sense solutions to end the wall, end capture and release, implement technology to the limit, support our brave law enforcers, and fully enforce Title 42. We will never stop fighting to protect the American people.

However, the Democrats have refused to join us. As recently as this month, 219 House Democrats voted to block consideration of Title 42 protection, despite the obvious need.

This is the same pattern of passivity that we have seen from the Minister of Homeland Security, Mayorkas. The fact is that everyone has known about this crisis for over a year, including Mayorca. In August, he admitted, “we can not continue like this, our people in the field can not continue, our system is not built for it.”

Mayorkas was right then and he has the power to fix it now. The Biden administration has the authority to restart the construction of the border wall, complete the capture and release, and fully enforce Remain in Mexico. But for 15 months, they have refused to do so because they prioritize vigilant demands over the best interests of the American people.

Mayorca owes Congress and the American people answers as to why the Biden administration continues to undermine effective border security and how he will keep our country safe going forward.

Later today, he will testify before the House Judiciary Committee. We need to hear him explain how he will stop the flow of fentanyl to our society, secure the border and protect the sovereignty of our nation.

Mayors need to come prepared with specific details, not more platitudes and spins, as we heard yesterday. Member of the House of Representatives Justice, Jim Jordan, sent a letter to Mayorca outlining his questions more than a week ago. Mayorkas has had plenty of time to prepare. Failure to provide this information would raise further questions about his suitability for the post.

We must secure the border now. Biden and Mayorkas must go up and do their job, not give up their responsibility to keep America safe.
