Beijing braces for Omicron Wave with storage, testing

BEIJING – Residents in China’s capital filled up with essentials as fears of a city-wide shutdown grew after authorities launched mass Covid-19 tests of people living or working in Chaoyang District, a favorite spot for foreign multinationals , embassies and global media organizations.

Municipal officials ordered three rounds of mass testing this week for Chaoyang’s 3.5 million people following a rise in new infections, with 29 cases reported Monday afternoon, eight more than in the previous 24-hour period. They also announced that the movements of residents in several large urban blocks covering about 2.5 square kilometers would be restricted as Covid tests are performed.
